Well, well, well… what do we have here? Our favourite Southern-drawling detective is back, and this time he’s bringing his particular brand of sleuthing to the London Film Festival! As someone who literally squealed in the cinema when that twist dropped in Glass Onion, I’m properly chuffed to share this absolute banger of an announcement.
The third installment in Rian Johnson’s wickedly clever Knives Out series, ‘Wake Up Dead Man’, is set to kick off the 2025 London Film Festival with what promises to be another mind-bending mystery. Daniel Craig returns as the inimitable Benoit Blanc, presumably with his distinctive Southern accent firmly in place (though after that Hugh Grant cameo in Glass Onion, who knows what surprises await?).
Remember when we thought nothing could top the sweater drama of the first film? Well, Johnson’s been quite clear about shaking things up this time. He’s mentioned wanting to “strike out in a completely new direction tonally and thematically” – and if that doesn’t get your detective senses tingling, I don’t know what will!
The Crown’s Josh O’Connor (and yes, we’re all still recovering from his Prince Charles) leads a knockout ensemble including Hollywood royalty Glenn Close, Josh Brolin, and Mila Kunis. Given Johnson’s track record for letting his cast play against type (Chris Evans in that jumper, anyone?), we’re betting there’s more to these casting choices than meets the eye.
While previous Knives Out mysteries tipped their hat to Agatha Christie, ‘Wake Up Dead Man’ seems to be cutting its own path. The title alone suggests something darker than its predecessors – though knowing Johnson’s clever way with expectations, we might be in for something completely unexpected. Remember how Glass Onion played with tech bros and power dynamics? What social commentary might be brewing this time?
The film opens the London Film Festival in October 2025, with general release dates to be announced. If previous Knives Out releases are anything to go by, expect a theatrical run followed by streaming availability.
Nothing’s confirmed yet, but given the success of the first two films and Netflix’s investment in the franchise, Blanc might have more mysteries in his future.
Each Knives Out mystery stands alone, but watching the earlier films will help you appreciate Johnson’s clever subversion of mystery tropes and Blanc’s peculiar detecting style.
With its prime festival spot, stellar cast, and promises of a fresh direction, ‘Wake Up Dead Man’ looks set to be another jewel in the Knives Out crown. As we count down to October 2025, one thing’s certain: we’ll be first in line to see what trouble Benoit Blanc gets himself into this time.
