Well, this is a bit more dramatic than your typical fairytale ending. Former Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot has dropped a proper bombshell about last year’s Snow White remake, and cor blimey, it’s not your average “creative differences” story. The Israeli actress reckons the film’s box office nightmare has more to do with political pressure than poisoned apples.
Remember when we thought the biggest controversy about Snow White would be whether the dwarfs were getting a PC makeover? Those were simpler times, weren’t they? Now Gadot’s revealed she copped death threats after her co-star Rachel Zegler went and posted “Free Palestine” on X while they were meant to be flogging the film.
It’s giving me flashbacks to that awkward “Imagine” video from lockdown – sometimes celebs just can’t read the room, can they? But this time, the stakes were considerably higher than a dodgy singalong.
Zegler’s post seemed innocent enough at first – your standard “thanks for watching our trailer” affair. But then came those two words: “Free Palestine.” Posted right in the middle of promoting a Disney fairytale, it was about as unexpected as finding a smartphone in the Seven Dwarfs’ cottage.
The timing couldn’t have been more awkward for Gadot, who’s been vocal about her support for Israel and served in the Israeli Defense Forces. Talk about workplace tension – makes those passive-aggressive office emails about stealing someone’s milk look rather tame, doesn’t it?
The film ended up performing about as well as a chocolate teapot at the box office. While most flops get blamed on bad reviews or poor marketing, Gadot’s taking a different tack. She reckons there’s been mounting pressure on celebs to speak out against Israel, creating a right old mess for the film’s promotion.
But here’s the thing – are audiences really making their cinema choices based on actors’ political views? Or was it just that we’ve had enough Disney remakes to last us until the next coronation?
Gadot specifically pointed to “pressure on celebrities to speak out against Israel” as a key factor in Snow White’s poor performance, claiming the political controversy overshadowed the film’s release.
While Zegler hasn’t directly addressed Gadot’s comments, she’s maintained her stance on social media, focusing on promoting her current projects including Romeo + Juliet.
The live-action remake significantly underperformed compared to previous Disney adaptations, though exact figures are still being debated by industry analysts.
This whole kerfuffle raises some proper questions about celebrity activism in 2025. When did we start expecting our fairy tale princesses to have fully formed opinions on international relations? Whatever happened to just worrying about whether they could hit the high notes?
One thing’s for certain – this isn’t the happily ever after Disney was hoping for. But in an age where every tweet can trigger a typhoon, perhaps it’s time we all had a think about what we really want from our entertainment.
What do you reckon? Has Hollywood become too political, or should celebs use their platforms to speak out on global issues? Drop your thoughts in the comments below – just keep it cleaner than a witch’s apple, yeah?
