Grab your wedding hats and dust off those “I Say A Little Prayer” vocals, because the rom-com news we’ve all been waiting for has finally arrived! Sony’s cooking up a sequel to My Best Friend’s Wedding, and they’ve nabbed none other than Past Lives genius Celine Song to pen the screenplay.
Remember watching the original My Best Friend’s Wedding on a worn-out VHS, desperately hoping Julia Roberts’ Julianne would sort out her love life? (Just me?) Well, 27 years later, we might finally get some closure. Celine Song, fresh off her Oscar-nominated triumph with Past Lives, is bringing her emotional depth and keen eye for complicated relationships to this beloved franchise.
As someone who’s watched the original approximately 47 times (and still gets misty-eyed during that restaurant singalong), this pairing feels absolutely inspired. Song’s demonstrated mastery of exploring love’s complexities in Past Lives suggests she’ll bring something special to Julianne Potter’s world.
The project’s still in early development at Sony, but nabbing Song is a massive coup. The playwright-turned-director has shown she knows her way around matters of the heart, and her involvement suggests this won’t be your typical cash-grab sequel.
The original film, which raked in over $300 million worldwide, saw Julia Roberts playing Julianne Potter, a food critic who realizes she’s in love with her best mate Michael (Dermot Mulroney) just as he’s about to marry the perfect Cameron Diaz. Cue sabotage attempts, that legendary karaoke scene, and one of the most refreshingly bittersweet endings in rom-com history.
While plot details are under wraps tighter than a wedding corset, Song’s involvement hints at something more nuanced than your average romantic comedy. Her work on Past Lives showed she can handle the weight of time’s passage and love’s evolution – perfect themes for revisiting Julianne’s story decades later.
Could we see a more mature Julianne finally finding her happy ending? Or perhaps she’s now the one watching history repeat itself with a younger generation? The possibilities are proper exciting.
No official casting announcements yet, but given Roberts’ recent return to rom-coms with Ticket to Paradise, it’s not outside the realm of possibility.
The film’s still in early development, so we’re likely looking at 2026 at the earliest. But good things come to those who wait!
While it’s too early to tell, Rupert Everett has previously expressed interest in reprising his scene-stealing role as George.
With Celine Song at the helm of the screenplay, My Best Friend’s Wedding 2 has the potential to be that rare sequel that actually adds something meaningful to the original. Whether you’re a die-hard fan of the 1997 classic or just love a good romantic comedy, this is definitely one to keep your eye on.
What do you reckon about this unexpected pairing? Drop your thoughts in the comments below – and while you’re at it, maybe share your favourite moment from the original. (Mine’s still George’s “Michael’s chasing Kimmy” phone call chain – absolute comedy gold!)
