Right, let’s be honest – when someone suggested I watch a film where Jason Statham does comedy and Melissa McCarthy plays a CIA agent, I thought they’d lost the plot. But cor blimey, was I wrong! Having rewatched Spy approximately 47 times since its 2015 release (no shame here), I can confirm it’s the comfort watch gift that keeps on giving.
Remember that feeling when you discovered chocolate and crisps actually taste brilliant together? That’s Spy’s cast in a nutshell. Melissa McCarthy leads the charge as Susan Cooper, a desk-bound CIA analyst who’s been quietly crushing on Jude Law’s suave agent Bradley Fine. When disaster strikes, she’s thrust into the field with all the grace of a penguin on roller skates – and it’s pure magic.
But the real revelation? Jason Statham sending up his own hard-man image as Rick Ford, a agent who claims he “once had to reattach his own arm with his other arm.” It’s the kind of performance that makes you wonder why we’ve been denying ourselves Statham’s comedy chops all these years.
What could’ve been just another spy movie parody transforms into something properly special under Paul Feig’s direction. Rose Byrne serves villain realness as Rayna Boyanov, delivering insults sharper than her stilettos. Her dynamic with McCarthy is comedy gold – think Mean Girls meets James Bond, but funnier.
And let’s talk about Miranda Hart, shall we? Our Miranda, doing scenes with 50 Cent. It’s the kind of casting that sounds like it came from a particularly mental game of Mad Libs, but somehow becomes one of the film’s many highlights.
In an era where we’re finally seeing more diverse leading ladies in action films (about bloody time!), Spy feels wonderfully ahead of its curve. Susan Cooper isn’t just comic relief – she’s smart, capable, and proper badass when she needs to be. Plus, in these rather heavy times, sometimes you just need to watch Jason Statham rant about face-off machines and uranium.
It’s rated 15 for good reason – there’s some colourful language and action violence. Save it for when the little ones are in bed!
The film’s currently streaming on Netflix UK and available to rent on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV+.
While there’s been chatter about a follow-up since 2015, nothing’s confirmed yet. Though after McCarthy and Feig’s recent reunion announcement at the 2025 BAFTA Tea Party, we’re keeping our fingers crossed!
If you haven’t experienced the joy of Spy yet, what are you waiting for? It’s that rare comedy that actually gets better with repeated viewings – trust me, I’m basically a professional at this point. Whether you’re in need of a pick-me-up or just fancy watching The Stath attempt comedy (and absolutely nail it), this is your ticket to guaranteed good times.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to watch it for the 48th time. Share your favourite moments in the comments below – but please, no spoilers about the face-off machine incident!
